How much PSI do you really need for patios, cars and siding?

A surface-by-surface breakdown of safe and effective pressure, plus why the PSI number on the box is only half the story.

PSI and GPM are a pair

Pressure breaks the bond between dirt and surface. Flow carries the dirt away. A machine with high pressure and low flow cuts a narrow stripe and leaves you working slowly; a machine with generous flow at modest pressure covers ground quickly on light soiling. Judging a washer on PSI alone is like judging a car on its top speed.

Safe pressure by surface

Car paint and clear coat: keep it gentle, wide spray, from a distance. Anything above light pressure risks lifting chips and forcing water past seals. Painted siding and uPVC: moderate pressure, fan spray, always angled downward so water does not drive up under laps.

Softwood decking: moderate pressure with a wide fan, kept moving, because a narrow jet will fur the grain and leave permanent stripes. Concrete, brick and stone: this is where genuine pressure earns its place, and where cordless units need multiple passes.

What 1,000-1,500 PSI actually removes

Loose dirt, mud, dust, pollen film, road salt, bird mess, cobwebs, fresh algae and general grime — all of it comes away with a single pass in this range. Established moss, black mould in mortar joints and years-old driveway staining will need repeated passes, a detergent dwell, or a stronger machine.

Nozzles matter more than most buyers think

The same machine can be gentle or aggressive depending on the nozzle. A narrow jet concentrates all the energy into a small area; a wide rinse spreads it. This is why a 6-in-1 or 3-mode nozzle is worth more in practice than an extra 200 PSI on the spec sheet.

Detergent does the work pressure cannot

For organic growth and greasy film, chemistry beats force. Apply a suitable cleaner, let it dwell for a few minutes without drying out, then rinse. A foam cannon makes this practical on cars because the soap clings long enough to lift grit before contact.

The practical answer

For household maintenance cleaning, 1,000-1,500 PSI with good nozzle options and a convenient water source will handle the overwhelming majority of jobs. Reserve high-pressure machines for restoration work, and remember that the highest number on the shelf is also the number most likely to damage something you own.
