How to clean a patio or balcony with no hose hookup

The problem nobody designs for

Roughly a third of the people who ask me about pressure washing do not have an outdoor tap. Apartments, condos, upper-floor balconies and rented terraces all suffer the same constraint, and almost every cleaning guide silently assumes a spigot on the wall.

Self-priming is the feature that matters

A washer with a self-priming intake draws water from any container: a bucket, a sink filled indoors, a water butt, a pool, a stream. That single capability converts a balcony from impossible to a fifteen-minute job. Without it, the machine is dead weight regardless of its pressure rating.

Managing water on a balcony

Work with less water than you think you need. Two five-gallon buckets is enough for a small balcony if you sweep first, and sweeping first also stops you turning dust into mud you then have to chase. Check where your drainage goes before you start — the neighbour below will notice before you do.

Cover or move anything that stains, and keep spray angled downward and inward rather than out over the rail.

The order to work in

Sweep, then apply detergent to the dirtiest zones and let it dwell, then rinse from the far corner back toward the drain so you never walk through what you have cleaned. Do railings and furniture before the floor. Finish with a wide rinse pass to stop streaking as the surface dries.

Noise, neighbours and timing

Battery washers are quiet enough for weekday-evening use, which is a genuine advantage in shared buildings. Still, water on a balcony is a social act: a short message to the neighbour below is cheaper than an argument about their laundry.

What to buy

Prioritise, in order: self-priming intake, low weight, nozzle options, then pressure. A light unit that draws from a bucket and offers a wide rinse mode will out-perform a heavier, more powerful machine you cannot feed.
