Cordless vs gas pressure washer: which one actually gets used?

Gas washers win on paper and lose in the garage. A practical comparison of pressure, setup time, maintenance and the jobs homeowners really do.

The spec sheet is not the decision

Every buying guide starts with PSI, because PSI is a number and numbers are easy to rank. A 3,000 PSI gas machine will out-clean a 1,200 PSI cordless unit on any single square foot of concrete. That fact settles nothing, because the question a homeowner is actually answering is not 'which machine cleans harder' but 'which machine will I roll out on a Tuesday evening to do fifteen minutes of work'.

In twenty years of cleaning exteriors I have watched more gas washers die of neglect than of overuse. They sit behind the bikes with stale fuel in the carburettor, and the patio stays green until someone books a professional.

Setup time is the hidden cost

A gas washer needs a fuel check, an oil check, a water feed connected before you ever start it, a pull-cord, and a warm-up. Realistically that is fifteen to twenty-five minutes from decision to water. A cordless unit needs a battery clipped in and an intake line dropped in a bucket: under a minute.

Multiply that difference across a year of small jobs and the cordless machine does more total cleaning despite being the weaker tool, because the threshold for starting is so much lower.

Where gas is still the right answer

If you are stripping paint, degreasing a workshop floor, cleaning commercial premises or restoring a large timber deck back to bare wood, buy the gas machine and do not look back. Those jobs need sustained flow as much as pressure, and no battery unit will supply it.

The same applies to anyone cleaning for money. A contractor's downtime is billable, so a machine that cleans twice as fast pays for its inconvenience within a week.

Where cordless quietly wins

Patios, decks, siding, garden furniture, bins, grills, cars, bikes, trailers, boots and pet paws. Windows and gutters where a ladder would otherwise be involved. Balconies with no tap at all, which gas cannot serve because there is no water supply to pressurise.

The bucket-fed intake is the feature that changes the category. A machine that carries its own water source is not a smaller pressure washer; it is a different tool that happens to spray hard.

Maintenance over five winters

Gas: fuel stabiliser, oil changes, carburettor cleaning, pump winterising, and a spring in which it does not start. Cordless: drain the line, bring the battery indoors, rinse the inlet filter.

This is the part of ownership no product page describes, and it is the reason the cheaper tool often outlives the more expensive one in a domestic setting.

How to choose in one paragraph

Write down the last five cleaning jobs you actually did, not the ones you imagine doing. If four of them were rinsing dirt, mud, pollen, salt or light mould off surfaces you can reach, a cordless unit is the correct purchase and the gas machine is an expensive way of feeling prepared. If three or more involved stripping, degreasing or restoring, buy gas.
